“1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
I have noticed in the wintertime, as I work later in the day, that I desire to have more lights on at the church. There is something not fun about walking out of my study to heat up a cup of coffee and seeing utter blackness. While how dark it gets and how soon it gets dark is impressive, there is little comfort in darkness other than when we are in bed, ready to sleep. The Lord is defined by three terms here that are all highly impactful to us this morning: my light, my salvation, and the stronghold of my life. Read 1 John 1:5 with me.
“5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
There is great security in the fact that God has no darkness at all. Darkness conceals, hides, manipulates, lies, steals, covers, and is rather useless for most of our waking hours. In God, there is only perfect light. Not only that, but He is also the brilliant light that keeps us safe from enemies, pitfalls on our path, and going the wrong way. With the proper light, you can stay on the road securely, feeling safe and unwavering in your travels. Since God is your light, salvation, and the stronghold of your life, do not look to the ever-present darkness. Keep your gaze fixed on the lighted path before you and the God of light who shines for you in the darkness.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Dan
